18 Tons of Mirror Polished Stainless Steel Sheets Delivered in 20 Days

Published On: June 23, 2026

Project Background

An interior design contractor based in Milan, Italy, won a prestigious project to supply decorative wall panels, column cladding, and ceiling inlays for a luxury retail flagship store in central Rome. The design concept demanded a seamless, high-reflectivity metallic finish to create an illusion of expanded space and amplified lighting within the boutique. After visiting our factory virtually and reviewing sample shipments, the contractor entrusted us with the full order, citing their previous supplier's inconsistent mirror quality and repeated delays.

Client Requirements
  • Material: SUS304 stainless steel, 0.8mm and 1.5mm thicknesses

  • Surface Finish: No. 8 mirror polish (also referred to as 8K finish), with distortion-free reflectivity comparable to glass mirrors

  • Protective Coating: Anti-fingerprint nano-layer to maintain pristine appearance during installation and daily retail use

  • Dimensions: 1219mm × 2438mm and 1524mm × 3048mm

  • Quantity: 18 metric tons (approximately 1,800 sheets)

  • Quality Standard: Reflectivity ≥ 85% measured by gloss meter at 60° angle; surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.05μm; no visible scratches, pits, haze, or orange peel effect under 1000-lux inspection lighting

  • Certification: ASTM A480/A480M compliance, third-party SGS inspection with full dimensional and surface quality report

  • Deadline: 22 days from order confirmation to container sealing, to align with a pre-booked vessel from Ningbo to Genoa

Products Supplied
  • 12 tons of No. 8 mirror polished SUS304 sheets, 0.8mm × 1219mm × 2438mm, with anti-fingerprint nano-coating

  • 6 tons of No. 8 mirror polished SUS304 sheets, 1.5mm × 1524mm × 3048mm, with anti-fingerprint nano-coating

  • All sheets individually inspected for reflectivity, flatness, and surface perfection before release

Production & Quality Control

Achieving true No. 8 mirror finish on large-format sheets is a multi-stage process requiring meticulous control at every step. Our production team executed the following workflow to meet both quality and deadline targets:

  1. Raw Material Selection: Premium SUS304 cold-rolled coils from a TISCO mill, selected for superior surface quality with minimal inclusions. Incoming coils inspected for thickness uniformity, surface defects, and mechanical properties. Full mill test certificates verified against ASTM A240/A240M.

  2. Precision Leveling & Cut-to-Length: Coils uncoiled and passed through a 21-roller precision leveler to achieve flatness tolerance ≤ 0.15mm per linear meter. Sheets cut to specified lengths on a CNC flying shear with ±0.3mm dimensional accuracy.

  3. Pre-Grinding Stage: Flat sheets began the polishing journey on a wide-belt abrasive grinding line. Progressive grit sequence: 120# → 240# → 400# → 600#. Each grit pass removed the scratches from the previous stage, establishing a uniform matte surface free of deep scratches and rolling marks.

  4. Intermediate Polishing: Sheets transferred to a multi-head polishing line using polishing compounds and cotton/cloth mops. Grit progression: 800# → 1200# → 2000#. At this stage, the surface began to develop a clear but slightly hazy reflective quality.

  5. Final Mirror Polishing (No. 8 Finish): The critical final stage used high-speed lambswool buffing wheels charged with ultra-fine green rouge (chromium oxide) polishing compound. Multiple passes under controlled pressure and temperature achieved the final mirror finish. Surface roughness verified at Ra 0.03–0.05μm using a Mitutoyo profilometer. Gloss meter readings confirmed ≥ 88% reflectivity at 60° — surpassing the client's 85% requirement.

  6. Anti-Fingerprint Nano-Coating: Mirror-finished sheets were roller-coated with a transparent nano-silica lacquer, oven-cured at 160°C to form a 6–8μm protective layer. This coating preserved mirror reflectivity while repelling fingerprints, oils, and light dust. Post-coating tests confirmed:

    • Water contact angle ≥ 110° (hydrophobic)

    • Cross-hatch adhesion: ISO 2409, Class 0 (perfect adhesion)

    • No visible reduction in gloss meter reading after coating

  7. Rigorous Quality Inspection (100% Piece-by-Piece):

    • Visual Inspection: Every sheet examined under 1200-lux daylight-simulating LED panels by trained inspectors. Acceptance criteria: zero visible scratches, zero pits, zero haze patches, zero edge burrs.

    • Reflectivity Test: Random 10% sample measured with a calibrated gloss meter at 60° — all readings between 88–91%.

    • Dimensional Check: Length, width, diagonal, and thickness measured on 20% of sheets; maximum diagonal deviation 0.5mm.

    • Coating Integrity: Adhesion tape test and MEK solvent rub test (200+ double rubs without breakthrough) on random samples from each pallet.

  8. Third-Party SGS Inspection: An SGS inspector visited our facility on Day 16. They witnessed the in-process quality checks, conducted independent measurements, and randomly selected sheets for salt spray testing (ASTM B117, 500 hours, Rating 10). The final SGS report was issued and shared with the client on Day 18.

Packing & Container Loading

Mirror finish sheets are extremely sensitive to scratches, pressure marks, and moisture. Our packing protocol for this order was designed to eliminate all transit risks.

  • Protective Film Application: Each sheet covered with laser-grade, single-sided adhesive PE film (70μm, black & white, UV-stabilized). The film applied by a laminating machine to ensure zero air bubbles and full surface coverage.

  • Sheet Stacking: Sheets arranged face-to-face and back-to-back in stacks of 20, with 5mm EPE foam interleaving between every sheet to distribute pressure evenly and prevent micro-abrasion.

  • Moisture Protection: Each stack wrapped in VCI anti-corrosion paper, then sealed inside a heavy-gauge polyethylene bag containing four 50g silica gel desiccant sachets. Bags heat-sealed to create a moisture-proof enclosure.

  • Wooden Crate Construction: Fumigation-free plywood crates built with 18mm thick panels, reinforced with internal steel corner brackets and external steel edge protectors. Inside, custom-cut high-density foam blocks cradle each sheet stack, preventing any movement within the crate.

  • Handling Labels: Each crate marked with "Mirror Surface — Handle with Extreme Care," "This Way Up," "Keep Dry," and individual crate number with barcode for traceability.

  • Container Loading: 18 tons distributed across one 40ft HQ container. Crates loaded in two tiers with 20mm honeycomb cardboard dunnage separating the layers. All remaining gaps filled with inflatable dunnage airbags, inflated to 0.2 bar to absorb ship motion and prevent crate shifting. Loading process completed in 5 hours under our logistics manager's supervision, documented with timestamped photos shared with the client.

Shipment Delivery

The full 18 tons were produced, inspected, packed, and loaded in 20 calendar days — two days ahead of the 22-day deadline. The container was transported to Ningbo Port and loaded onto the scheduled vessel bound for Genoa. Shipping documents — including Bill of Lading, Packing List, Commercial Invoice, Mill Test Certificates, SGS Inspection Report, and Certificate of Origin (Form A) — were delivered to the client via express courier within 3 business days of sailing.

After a 30-day ocean voyage, the container arrived at Genoa Port. The client's receiving team devanned the cargo under our video guidance and confirmed: zero sheets with transit damage, zero moisture ingress, mirror finish pristine across all 1,800+ sheets. The material was immediately forwarded to the fabrication workshop for cutting and installation at the Rome boutique. The client subsequently placed a repeat order for their next luxury retail project in Florence.
