ASTM A249 / A249M Welded Austenitic Steel Boiler, Superheater, Heat-Exchanger, And Condenser Tubes

ASTM A249 Welded Stainless Steel Tube available including: Grades TP304H, TP309H, TP309HCb, TP310H, TP310HCb, TP316H, TP321H, TP347H, and TP348H are modifications of Grades TP304, TP309S, TP309Cb, TP310S, TP310Cb, TP316, TP321, TP347, and TP348, and are intended for high-temperature service such as for superheaters and reheaters. The tubing sizes and thicknesses usually furnished to this specification are 1/8 in. [3.2 mm] in inside diameter to 12 in. [304.8 mm] in outside diameter and 0.015 to 0.320 in. [0.4 to 8.1 mm], inclusive, in wall thickness. Tubing having other dimensions may be furnished, provided such tubes comply with all other requirements of this specification.

Scope of application: Suitable for welding austenitic stainless steel pipes used in the manufacture of equipment such as boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers and condensers.

 

Grades and chemical composition: Covers a variety of austenitic stainless steel grades, such as the common TP304, TP304L, TP316, TP316L, etc., and clearly stipulates the chemical composition of each grade, including the content range of elements such as carbon (C), silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and molybdenum (Mo). For example, the carbon content in TP304 is ≤0.08%, the chromium content is 18.00-20.00%, and the nickel content is 8.00-11.00%; the carbon content of TP304L is lower, ≤0.035%, and the content range of other elements is slightly different. Different chemical compositions determine the performance characteristics and applicable environment of the material.

 

Dimensions: Including dimensional requirements such as outer diameter and wall thickness. The outer diameter usually ranges from 1/8 inch (about 3.2 mm) to 12 inches (about 304.8 mm), and the wall thickness generally ranges from 0.015 inches (about 0.4 mm) to 0.320 inches (about 8.1 mm). However, other sizes of ASTM A249 Welded Stainless Steel Tube can also be provided upon request, but they must meet other requirements in the standard. For pipes with an outer diameter less than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) or a wall thickness less than 0.015 inches (0.4 mm), the mechanical property requirements may not apply.

 

Mechanical properties: The mechanical properties that different grades of welded stainless steel pipes should have under different conditions are clarified, such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, etc. For example, the tensile strength of TP304 is generally above 515MPa, the yield strength is at least 205MPa, and the elongation is above 35%. These mechanical performance indicators ensure that the pipe can withstand the corresponding loads and stresses during use, and ensure the stability and safety of its structure.

 

Manufacturing process: The manufacturing process of welded stainless steel pipes is standardized, including welding methods, cold processing, heat treatment and other process requirements. For example, it is required to adopt appropriate welding processes, such as tungsten inert gas shielded welding (TIG welding), metal inert gas shielded welding (MIG welding), etc., to ensure the quality of the weld; through appropriate cold processing (such as forging) and heat treatment (such as annealing) processes, the structure and performance of the weld are close to the parent material, thereby improving the overall quality and performance of the pipe. In addition, the selection requirements of raw materials and the key points of quality control in the production process are also specified.

 

Quality control and inspection: Strict quality control and inspection are required throughout the entire production process from raw materials to finished products. Raw materials must undergo chemical composition analysis, mechanical property testing, surface quality inspection, etc.; key process parameters such as welding parameters, heat treatment temperature and time must be monitored in real time during the production process; finished products must undergo appearance inspection, dimension measurement, water pressure testing, non-destructive testing (such as eddy current testing, ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, etc.) and re-inspection of chemical composition and mechanical properties. Some special applications may also require additional tests, such as intergranular corrosion sensitivity test, high temperature endurance strength test, etc., to ensure that the product quality meets the standard requirements.
