Products Description

SUS202: The Manganese-Austenitic Alternative

SUS202 belongs to the 200 series of austenitic stainless steels, a family developed to provide the fabrication characteristics of the 300 series at a reduced nickel content. To understand SUS202 is to understand the role of nickel in stainless steel and the metallurgical strategy by which manganese and nitrogen can partially replace it.

Nickel is the primary austenite stabilizer in the 300 series stainless steels. In 304, the 8.0–10.5% nickel content ensures that the face-centered cubic austenitic crystal structure—the structure that gives these steels their characteristic ductility, toughness, and formability—is stable at room temperature and below. Without sufficient austenite-stabilizing elements, the steel would transform to a ferritic or martensitic structure with very different and generally less formable mechanical properties.

Manganese and nitrogen are also austenite stabilizers, though each operates through a different metallurgical mechanism. Manganese, when present in sufficient quantity, expands the temperature range over which austenite is stable. Nitrogen is an exceptionally potent austenite stabilizer on a per-weight basis and also contributes to solid solution strengthening. In SUS202, the nickel content is reduced to 4.0–6.0%—approximately half that of 304—and the austenite stability is maintained by the combination of 7.5–10.0% manganese and a controlled nitrogen addition, typically up to 0.25%.

The mechanical properties of annealed SUS202 reflect this metallurgical design. Tensile strength typically ranges from 515 MPa to 655 MPa, compared to 485–515 MPa for annealed 304, with the higher strength attributable to the solid solution strengthening effect of nitrogen and manganese. Yield strength is typically 275 MPa or higher, compared to the 205 MPa minimum for 304—a difference that provides slightly greater stiffness in service and marginally better resistance to denting in thin-gauge applications. Elongation of 40% minimum in the annealed condition provides the ductility necessary for the bending, forming, deep drawing, and stretch forming operations that are standard in sheet metal fabrication.

The corrosion resistance of SUS202 is adequate for the applications for which it is specified. In clean indoor atmospheres—offices, retail environments, residential interiors—SUS202 maintains its surface appearance indefinitely. It resists the mild organic acids and food products encountered in kitchen and food service applications. It withstands the general handling, cleaning, and occasional moisture exposure that characterize consumer product and furniture applications. What SUS202 does not provide is the enhanced corrosion resistance of 304, which contains higher nickel and is specified for applications involving more aggressive chemical exposure, outdoor weathering, or contact with chloride-containing solutions. The specifier selects SUS202 with the understanding that the cost advantage relative to 304 is realized in applications where 304's full corrosion resistance is not required, and the performance of SUS202 in the intended service environment has been confirmed.

Cold Rolled Processing and the 0.5mm Gauge

Cold rolling is the manufacturing process that transforms hot rolled stainless steel strip into the dimensionally precise, smooth-surfaced sheet required for the thin-gauge applications where SUS202 is most commonly specified. The process is performed at room temperature on powerful rolling mills that reduce the thickness of annealed and pickled hot rolled strip to the final ordered gauge.

The 0.5mm thickness highlighted for this product is a key gauge in the cold rolled sheet range. At half a millimeter, the sheet is thin enough to be easily formed, sheared, punched, and otherwise fabricated on the standard sheet metal equipment found in appliance manufacturing plants, architectural metalwork shops, and general fabrication facilities. It is thick enough to provide useful self-supporting rigidity for moderate panel sizes, to resist denting under normal service conditions, and to be welded using standard GTAW (TIG) procedures without the burn-through that can complicate welding of thinner foils.

The cold rolling reduction from hot rolled strip to 0.5mm sheet is substantial—typically a 70–90% reduction depending on the starting hot band thickness. This heavy cold work imparts a smooth, uniform surface that is further enhanced by the subsequent annealing and skin-passing operations that produce the final surface finish. The cold rolled surface is free from the scale, roughness, and dimensional variability that characterize hot rolled products, providing the consistent appearance and precise thickness that appliance and architectural applications demand.

After cold rolling to gauge, the strip is annealed to recrystallize the heavily cold-worked microstructure. For SUS202, annealing is performed at 1010–1090°C, a temperature range that dissolves any chromium carbides, recrystallizes the deformed austenite grains, and produces the fully softened, ductile microstructure required for forming and fabrication. Rapid cooling—typically accelerated air cooling or water quenching for heavier gauges—follows immediately, preventing carbide precipitation during passage through the sensitization temperature range of approximately 425–870°C.

The final manufacturing step is the skin pass. This is a light cold rolling pass with a very small reduction, typically 0.5–1.5%, applied to the annealed strip. The skin pass serves multiple purposes: it imparts the final surface finish, it improves flatness by eliminating the yield point elongation that would otherwise produce stretcher strains during subsequent forming, and it establishes the final mechanical properties. The surface finish produced by skin passing is typically a bright, smooth, uniformly matte finish—the standard 2B finish that is the default surface condition for cold rolled stainless steel sheet.

Wide Applications Across Manufacturing Sectors

The designation of applications as "widely used" accurately describes the commercial reality of SUS202. This is a grade that appears across the full spectrum of manufactured products where stainless steel is specified for a combination of appearance, corrosion resistance, formability, and cost-effectiveness.

In kitchen equipment and appliance manufacturing, SUS202 sheet at 0.5mm and similar gauges forms the outer shells, door panels, control panel faces, and trim components of refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, range hoods, microwave ovens, and commercial kitchen equipment. The material provides the bright, clean, hygienic appearance that consumers associate with quality kitchen appliances, while the moderate corrosion resistance handles the occasional water splash, food spill, and cleaning chemical exposure that characterize kitchen environments. The formability of SUS202 supports the deep drawing, stretch forming, and press brake bending operations that produce the complex three-dimensional shapes of modern appliance design.

In architectural and interior decoration, SUS202 sheet serves as wall paneling, column covers, elevator cabin interiors, reception desk cladding, and decorative trim elements in commercial buildings, retail environments, and hospitality settings. The sheets can be supplied with a variety of surface finishes beyond the standard 2B—brushed, hairline, mirror polished, embossed, or patterned—to meet the aesthetic requirements of the architectural specification. The moderate corrosion resistance of SUS202 is fully adequate for interior architectural applications where the material is protected from outdoor weather exposure and aggressive chemical contact.

In automotive manufacturing, SUS202 is employed for trim components, exhaust system parts, and decorative elements where the combination of appearance, formability, and cost meets the demanding economics of automotive production. The material accepts the bright anodized and electroplated finishes sometimes applied to automotive stainless steel trim.

In general sheet metal fabrication, SUS202 is the material chosen for brackets, enclosures, housings, panels, guards, and the myriad custom-fabricated components that constitute the output of job shops and contract manufacturers serving diverse industrial customers. Its availability in a wide dimensional range, its predictable forming behavior, and its weldability with standard filler metals make it the default stainless steel for general fabrication where 304 would be over-specified.

Dimensional Flexibility for Efficient Manufacturing

The length range of 1000mm to 12000mm and the width options of 1000mm, 1220mm, and 2500mm provide the dimensional flexibility required for efficient material utilization across different manufacturing sectors and production methods.

The 1000mm width serves metric-coordinated manufacturing. Standard sheet sizes in this width—1000 × 2000mm, 1000 × 3000mm—align with the dimensional modules used in European and Asian architectural systems, cabinet manufacturing, and appliance production. For manufacturers operating on metric tooling, fixturing, and work cell dimensions, this width eliminates the edge trimming that would be required if using imperial-width sheet.

The 1220mm width is the 4-foot standard that dominates global sheet metal manufacturing. The 1220 × 2440mm (4' × 8') sheet is the universal format for job shops, architectural fabricators, and general manufacturing. This width is compatible with standard material handling equipment, storage racking, CNC sheet processing machines, and press brake tooling designed around the 4-foot module. It is the default width for stock inventory and the starting point for the majority of fabrication projects.

The 2500mm width provides extra-wide sheet for applications where large panel dimensions are required. Architectural feature walls, column-free cladding panels, and commercial kitchen countertops in single-piece construction benefit from this width, which eliminates or reduces the horizontal joints that would be required when using standard-width sheet. The availability of 2500mm width in 0.5mm SUS202 is particularly notable, as wide thin sheet demands excellent flatness and thickness uniformity—attributes that are characteristic of well-controlled cold rolling practice.

The length range up to 12000mm supports the fabrication of long continuous components—roof flashing, wall base trim, countertop edge returns, and architectural feature strips—in single lengths that eliminate the butt joints that would be necessary with shorter standard lengths. Custom cut-to-length supply eliminates in-house shearing operations, reduces material handling, and ensures that the sheet arrives at the production line dimensioned for the specific part being manufactured.

Formability, Weldability, and Fabrication Characteristics

SUS202 at 0.5mm gauge is selected for manufacturing applications precisely because it processes predictably and reliably on standard sheet metal fabrication equipment. The formability, weldability, and general fabrication characteristics of the material are consistent with the expectations established by decades of experience with 304 stainless steel sheet.

Bending of 0.5mm SUS202 sheet on press brakes produces clean, consistent bend angles with moderate spring-back. The minimum internal bend radius of one times material thickness—0.5mm for the 0.5mm gauge—is the standard recommendation for cold bending of austenitic stainless steel sheet, and SUS202 conforms to this guideline. The material can be bent to tighter radii with careful tooling setup and acceptance of a higher scrap rate, but for production manufacturing, the 1× thickness guideline provides the reliable starting point.

Deep drawing and stretch forming operations benefit from the 40% minimum elongation of the annealed sheet. The material flows under the drawing punch and stretches into the die cavity without the cracking or necking that would occur with less ductile materials. The work-hardening rate of SUS202 during cold forming is similar to that of 304, meaning that tooling and process parameters developed for 304 can generally be applied to SUS202 with minimal adjustment.

Welding of 0.5mm SUS202 sheet employs GTAW (TIG) as the preferred process, with ER308 or ER308L filler metal. The thin gauge demands careful heat control to prevent burn-through, particularly at the edge of the weld joint. Pulsed TIG welding, which cycles the arc current between a high pulse that provides penetration and a low background current that allows the weld pool to cool, is the preferred technique for thin-gauge stainless steel sheet. Autogenous welding—without filler wire—is commonly used for tight-fit butt joints in thin sheet, producing a smooth, narrow weld bead with minimal distortion.

The post-weld appearance of SUS202 sheet is comparable to that of 304. A properly shielded weld on clean material produces a bright silver weld bead with a light straw to light blue heat tint on the adjacent base metal. This heat tint must be removed by pickling paste or mechanical cleaning to restore full corrosion resistance to the heat-affected zone. For cosmetic applications where the weld will be visible, the bead can be ground flush and the surface refinished to match the surrounding sheet, though the cost of this operation should be factored into the manufacturing economics.

Quality and Supply

Every shipment of SUS202 cold rolled stainless steel sheet is accompanied by material certification to EN 10204 3.1, documenting the full chemical analysis—chromium, nickel, manganese, and the carbon and nitrogen content that critically affect mechanical properties and weldability—together with the mechanical test results including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness. The certification provides the traceability from the delivered sheet back to the originating cast and heat number, supporting the quality assurance documentation requirements of ISO 9001 manufacturing systems and end-user specifications.

The 0.5mm sheet is visually inspected for surface defects—pits, scratches, roll marks, and scale inclusions—that would compromise the appearance or fabrication performance of the material. Thickness is verified to be within the tolerance band specified for cold rolled sheet. The sheet is supplied with the standard 2B cold rolled finish, with other surface finishes available on request.

Packaging protects the 0.5mm gauge sheet from the handling damage to which thin material is particularly susceptible. Sheets are interleaved with protective paper or plastic film, stacked on robust pallets, edge-protected, and weatherproof-wrapped for shipment. For export containerized transport, additional edge and corner protection and desiccant packs are included to prevent moisture-related surface staining during transit.

If you have a specific manufacturing application, production volume, or surface finish requirement to discuss, I can confirm that SUS202 at 0.5mm gauge is the appropriate material for your requirements, provide dimensional and tolerance information for your tooling design, advise on forming and welding parameters for your manufacturing process, and prepare a quotation for the required sheet dimensions, quantities, and delivery schedule.
