Material Identity: Why Grade 201 for Elevator Interiors
Grade 201 belongs to the austenitic family and is defined by its chromium-manganese-nickel composition. Typical chemistry includes chromium at 16.0–18.0%, nickel at 3.5–5.5%, manganese at 5.5–7.5%, and nitrogen up to 0.25%. The higher manganese content partially substitutes for nickel, resulting in a cost structure significantly more stable than nickel-dependent 304.
In indoor elevator environments—where exposure to chlorides, acids, and moisture is minimal—201 with a properly executed hairline finish performs indistinguishably from 304 in appearance and day-to-day durability, at a meaningfully lower cost per square meter. This fundamental value proposition has made 201 HL the commercial default for interior elevator panels across Asia, the Middle East, and cost-optimized projects globally. Importantly, the material arrives non-magnetic in its annealed state before brushing, and the slight magnetism introduced by the cold-working effect of the hairline process has no functional consequence in decorative applications.
The Hairline Surface: Precision-Brushed for Elevator Lighting
Elevator decoration places unique demands on brushed stainless steel surfaces that go far beyond what general-purpose architectural cladding requires. Cabins are illuminated by linear, diffused, or spot lighting from close range—often less than 30 centimeters from the wall surface. Under these conditions, poorly executed hairline finishes immediately reveal their flaws: waviness, ghost lines, grain discontinuity, and banding patterns that would be invisible in a naturally lit lobby become glaringly obvious.
Our HL processing is designed specifically to perform under these unforgiving conditions. The hairline grain is applied on wide-belt abrasive lines using precisely tensioned 150–240 grit abrasive belts that run the full sheet length in a single continuous pass. This produces an unbroken, parallel linear grain with consistent depth and spacing from edge to edge. There are no start-stop marks, no lap lines, and no grain wander—the common defects associated with multi-pass or hand-brushed sheets.
The directional consistency of our HL grain is equally critical. In an elevator cabin, panels must align across door edges, wall joints, and corner returns. A single panel with deviating grain direction breaks the visual continuity of the entire interior. We grain each sheet identically and supply it with clear directional markings so fabricators can maintain perfect alignment throughout the installation.
Beyond aesthetics, the HL finish offers practical benefits that directly address the realities of elevator service. The linear grain naturally masks fingerprints, smudges, and minor surface scratches far better than mirror-polished (8K) or standard 2B finishes. In high-touch environments where dozens or hundreds of hands contact the walls daily, this self-concealing property keeps cabins looking clean and well-maintained between cleaning cycles, reducing maintenance complaints and extending the perceived newness of the installation.
Dimensional Capabilities & Thickness Guidance
We supply 201 hairline stainless steel sheets in thicknesses from 0.3 to 3.0 mm, covering every elevator interior application from lightweight ceiling inlays to heavy-duty kick plates.
For ceiling panels, light diffuser trims, and non-structural decorative inlays, the 0.3 to 0.5 mm range provides sufficient rigidity when properly supported while minimizing weight and material cost. These thin gauges are typically bonded to a substrate or mechanically retained within a framing system.
Wall cladding interior skins—whether bonded to a backing board or installed in a cassette system—are most commonly specified at 0.6 to 0.8 mm. This range offers the ideal combination of flatness, handling robustness during fabrication, and cost efficiency for the large surface areas that dominate elevator cabin walls.
Elevator door skins, control panel faces, and lobby wall panels installed with direct-fix or cassette methods typically require 1.0 to 1.2 mm. At these thicknesses, the sheet provides sufficient dent resistance for moderate-impact locations while remaining readily formable for corner returns, edge folds, and cutouts for buttons and displays.
For high-traffic protection zones—kick plates, wainscoting panels, and lower wall sections subject to cart and luggage impacts—we recommend 1.5 to 2.0 mm. The additional thickness dramatically improves impact resistance and maintains panel flatness over years of service in busy commercial and residential buildings.
At the upper end, 2.0 to 3.0 mm sheets serve structural decorative elements, column cladding, and floor transition trims where the stainless steel itself contributes to the mechanical integrity of the installation rather than merely decorating a separate structural substrate.
Our standard sheet sizes are 1219 × 2438 mm (4'×8'), 1219 × 3048 mm (4'×10'), and 1524 × 3048 mm (5'×10'). Custom cut-to-size service is available per fabrication drawings, utilizing CNC shearing for straight cuts, laser cutting for complex profiles with aperture cutouts, or waterjet where heat-affected edges must be avoided entirely. Thickness tolerances are held to ±0.02 mm for gauges at or below 1.0 mm, and ±0.03 to 0.05 mm for the 1.2 to 3.0 mm range, in accordance with ASTM A480 and GB/T 3280.
Visual & Physical Characteristics
The hairline finish on our 201 sheets presents a cool silver-grey tone with low to medium reflectivity. Rather than producing harsh specular reflections that can cause visual discomfort in the confined space of an elevator cabin, the brushed surface diffuses light softly and evenly. This is particularly important under the cool white LED lighting (4000K–6500K) now standard in modern elevator installations. The slightly warmer undertone of 201 compared to 304—attributable to its higher manganese content—is imperceptible under these lighting conditions, and panels from either grade can be mixed without detectable color mismatch.
The cold-working effect of the brushing process itself increases surface hardness compared to the base 2B finish. While this is a subtle effect, it translates to marginally improved scratch resistance that contributes to the long-term appearance of the installation. The surface is produced in longitudinal grain orientation (parallel to the sheet length) as standard, with transverse grain available on custom order for designs that call for horizontal linear flow.
Anti-Fingerprint Coating Option
For elevator applications where cleaning frequency is a concern—such as high-rise residential buildings, hospital elevators, and shopping mall lifts—we offer an optional anti-fingerprint (AFP) nano-coating applied after the brushing process. This transparent treatment creates a hydrophobic surface with a water contact angle exceeding 105 degrees, causing fingerprint oils to bead on the surface rather than spreading into visible smears. The coating is heat-resistant to 150°C, does not yellow under UV exposure, and maintains the original depth and clarity of the hairline grain without the plastic-film appearance that plagues inferior laminated solutions.
Fabrication Compatibility
Grade 201 hairline sheets are supplied with a protective PVC film on the brushed face to prevent handling damage during transit, fabrication, and installation. The material accepts standard sheet metal processing methods including shearing, bending, punching, and roll forming. When bending, we recommend a minimum internal radius of 1.5 times the material thickness to avoid surface cracking. The brushed surface should be oriented with the grain direction parallel to the bend line wherever possible, as bending across the grain can produce micro-cracking along the abrasive striations that becomes visible under elevator lighting. For applications requiring welding, 201-compatible filler metals should be used, and the heat-affected zone will require re-brushing to restore uniform surface appearance.
Packaging & Delivery
Each sheet is interleaved with protective paper, stacked on export-grade timber pallets, and wrapped in weatherproof polyethylene for containerized shipment. Grain direction is marked on the packaging and on each sheet's protective film to streamline fabrication workflow. Every shipment includes a mill test certificate confirming chemical composition and mechanical properties.
If you have a specific elevator project, panel layout, or thickness requirement in mind, I can provide detailed weight calculations per sheet, recommend the optimal gauge for your installation method, or prepare a cost comparison against 304 HL for your quantity.
