The 2000 series aluminum alloys (Al-Cu-Mg, “Duralumin”) are heat-treatable, high-strength materials, second only to the 7000 series in tensile strength. They are widely known as aviation-grade aluminum for critical structural applications.
- Main alloying elements: Copper (Cu: 3.8–5.0%) + Magnesium (Mg: 1.2–1.8%), plus Mn/Ti for grain control.
- Common grades:
- 2024 (Al-4.4Cu-1.5Mg-0.6Mn): The most popular high-strength grade.
- 2A12 (LY12): Chinese equivalent of 2024.
- 2017 (2A11): Medium-strength, good formability.
- 2011: Free-cutting grade with Pb/Bi for precision machining.
- 2219: High-temperature resistant, for aerospace fuel tanks.
- High strength: Tensile strength 420–480 MPa (T3/T4), comparable to some steels.
- Heat-treatable: Strength enhanced via solution treatment + aging (T3/T4/T6).
- Good machinability: Excellent for CNC, threading, and precision parts (especially 2011).
- Moderate corrosion resistance: Prone to intergranular corrosion; requires anodizing, cladding, or painting.
- Limited weldability: Susceptible to cracking; riveting/bolting preferred.
