316 Round Stainless Steel Solid Bar ASTM A276 / A479 Standard

This specification applies to hot- and cold-finished stainless steel bars, including rounds, squares, and hexagons, as well as hot-rolled or extruded shapes including angles, tees, and channels used in boiler and pressure vessel construction. Four grades of stainless steel are available: austenitic, austenitic-ferritic, ferritic, and martensitic. Mechanical parameters such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness must be measured for specimens subjected to normalized, tempered, annealed, and quenched conditions. The austenitic stainless steels will be heat treated and tested for corrosion.

Application

Chemical composition

Specifies the chemical composition requirements for various stainless steel grades, which vary from grade to grade. For example, the common 304 stainless steel contains 18%-20% chromium (Cr) and 8%-10.5% nickel (Ni).

Mechanical properties

For the various grades of materials covered, the mechanical properties that should be met are specified, such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness. At least one room temperature test should be carried out by the manufacturer on a specimen from at least one bar or profile of each batch of material. The yield strength is usually determined by the (0.2%) strain method specified in Test Methods and Definitions A370.

Grain size requirements

All austenitic grades shall be tested for average grain size in accordance with Test Method E112 and shall comply with the corresponding grain size requirements. For example, for Types 304H, 309H, 310H, and 316H, it shall be ASTM No. 6 or coarser; for Types 321H, 347H, and 348H, it shall be ASTM No. 7 or coarser, etc.

Other requirements

These include requirements for heat treatment of materials, processing quality, dimensions and allowable deviations, test quantity and method, specimen preparation, reprocessing, inspection, rejection and re-centering, material test reports, certificates of conformity, packaging, marking, and loading.
