제품 설명
316L Stainless Steel Plate ASTM A480 No.1 Finish Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Sheet For Marine Applications

316L stainless steel is a low-carbon version of 316 stainless steel. Therefore, the "L" in 316L stands for "low carbon."316L (31603) is an austenitic low-carbon stainless steel. Tests have shown that, due to the addition of molybdenum (Mo), 316L stainless steel exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, particularly against pitting corrosion; it also has good high-temperature strength; excellent work hardening properties (weakly magnetic after machining); and is non-magnetic in the solution-treated condition.

Main Composition: SS316L Plate 316L Stainless Steel Plate ASTM A480 No.1 Finish Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Sheet For Marine Applications

The composition of 316L Stainless Steel Sheet consists of numerous key elements. Each element plays a unique role in giving 316L stainless steel its distinctive properties. The table below lists detailed information about these elements:

Chemical Elements Percentage Content and Role in Stainless Steel
Iron (Fe) Balance—Constitutes the primary base material of the alloy or 316L SS.
Chromium (Cr) 16% to 18% – Provides corrosion resistance by forming a protective oxide layer on the surface of 316L SS.
Nickel (Ni) 10% to 14% – Enhances corrosion resistance, particularly in acidic environments.
Molybdenum (Mo) 2% to 3% – Enables the stainless steel to resist pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in environments containing high levels of chlorides.
Manganese (Mn) 2% – Makes the steel stronger and enhances its toughness.
Silicon (Si) 0.75% – Enhances its resistance to oxidation.
Carbon (C) ≤0.03% – Reduces the carbon content to prevent carbide formation and improve weldability.
Performance of UNS S31603 Stainless Steel Plate

316L-grade stainless steel possesses numerous unique properties that make it a highly sought-after, high-quality stainless steel across many industries. Here are some of its key properties:

Corrosion Resistance – 316L SS offers excellent corrosion resistance, enabling it to withstand harsh environments or aggressive chemicals.

Formability and Weldability – It exhibits high levels of formability and weldability. This reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during the welding process.

Strength and Durability – 316L stainless steel offers superior performance. Its tensile strength allows it to resist deformation even under the harshest conditions.

Heat Resistance – It can withstand temperatures as high as 870°C (1,600°F) for continuous use and up to 925°C (1,700°F) for intermittent use. This makes it an ideal choice for high-temperature environments.

Magnetism – In the annealed condition, 316L stainless steel is non-magnetic.

Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Sheet Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing process includes carefully controlled stages to guarantee consistent quality:

  • Steelmaking: Premium raw materials are melted and refined to achieve the required 316L stainless steel chemical composition.
  • Continuous Casting: Molten steel is cast into slabs with uniform internal structure.
  • Hot Rolling: Slabs are heated to approximately 1100–1250°C and rolled to the specified thickness, improving workability and strength.
  • Solution Annealing: Heat treatment restores corrosion resistance and relieves internal stresses.
  • Pickling: Acid cleaning removes oxide scale, producing the characteristic No.1 finish of hot rolled stainless steel.
  • Leveling & Cutting: Plates are flattened and cut to standard or custom dimensions.
  • Inspection & Packaging: Each 316L stainless steel plate undergoes dimensional inspection, surface quality checks, mechanical testing, and chemical analysis before export.

This manufacturing process ensures excellent weldability, superior formability, and reliable performance in demanding industrial and marine environments.

316L Stainless Steel Plate Chemical Composition

The excellent corrosion resistance of EN 1.4404 Stainless Steel Plate is achieved through its balanced chemical composition. Compared with 304 stainless steel, the addition of 2–3% molybdenum (Mo) significantly improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion, making it the preferred marine grade stainless steel.

Advantages of 316L Stainless Steel

There are many reasons why this type of stainless steel is widely popular in numerous industrial applications. Some of the most common advantages include:

It has an attractive, lustrous appearance, making it ideal for design and architectural applications.

It reduces the likelihood of carbide precipitation, making it weldable.

Because it is resistant to oxidation, it has a long service life and is highly durable.

It is non-magnetic, which is very useful for certain scientific and electrical applications.

It offers enhanced corrosion resistance in environments such as those containing salt, chemicals, and seawater.

Differences Between 316L and 316 Stainless Steel

316L and 316 stainless steel have similar properties. However, they also have some distinct differences. Here are the details of these differences:

Corrosion Resistance
In terms of corrosion resistance, 316L has a lower carbon content than 316. As a result, it offers better corrosion resistance, and its welds do not corrode as easily as those of 316 stainless steel.

Magnetic Properties
Both 316L and 316 stainless steel are non-magnetic in their as-rolled condition. However, after cold working, they become slightly magnetic.

Prices of 316 and 316L Stainless Steel
The price of 316L stainless steel is slightly higher than that of 316. This is due to the manufacturing process and its higher level of corrosion resistance.

Main Applications of 316L Stainless Steel

The unique chemical composition of 316L stainless steel makes it an ideal choice for many industrial applications. Some of the most common applications include:

The construction of equipment such as reactors, storage tanks, and piping in the chemical processing industry.

The construction of equipment in the pharmaceutical industry that handles corrosive substances or requires regular cleaning.

Marine industries such as shipbuilding, marine hardware, and offshore oil platforms.

Medical devices: Structures for surgical instruments, implants, and similar items.

The construction and decorative industries, such as building facades and railings.

Construction of food processing equipment.

The beauty industry: Jewelry manufacturing for people with sensitive skin.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What does the "L" in 316L-grade stainless steel stand for?

The "L" in 316L-grade stainless steel stands for "low carbon." This means that the carbon content of this stainless steel is at most 0.03%.

2. Why is 316L stainless steel more expensive?

It costs more because it offers higher corrosion resistance, contains added molybdenum, and has a reduced carbon content—all of which increase its production costs.

3. Is 316L-grade stainless steel food-grade?

Yes. Due to its corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning, it helps maintain better hygiene in the food industry.

4. Which is better, 316L or 304?

If you plan to use 316L for chemical or marine applications, it is the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you want a lower-cost material that also performs perfectly in less corrosive operating conditions or environments, then 304 is the ideal choice for you.

5. Is 316L waterproof?

316L is not waterproof, but it offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it well-suited for marine environments.

6. Is 316L stainless steel hypoallergenic?

Yes.

7. Is 316L stainless steel magnetic?

No. In the annealed condition, it is non-magnetic. However, after cold working, it acquires a certain degree of magnetism.
