Thorough cleaning is the prerequisite for any precision polishing work. Residual grease, dust, or chemical impurities can cause secondary damage during high-speed grinding, potentially creating deep scratches.
- Cleaning Process: Use neutral detergent with a soft sponge. For stubborn stains, a soft-bristle brush may assist—strictly avoid steel wool or other abrasive tools that cause physical damage. After washing, rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely.
- Damage Assessment and Coarse Grinding: For surfaces with welding slag, deep pits, or severe wear, pre-grinding is necessary. Use 80-120 grit sandpaper for initial leveling to create a flat base for subsequent fine grinding.
Grinding is the core process determining surface flatness. Follow the "coarse to fine" principle, progressively eliminating scratches from previous steps through gradually finer grits.
- Equipment and Parameters: Power sanders are recommended at 4,000-6,500 RPM. Excessive speed may cause localized overheating and metal discoloration.
- Cross-Grinding Technique: This ensures uniform results. When advancing to finer grits (150→240→400→600→1200), rotate the grinding direction 90° from the previous step. This method effectively covers and removes previous marks until achieving a uniform satin texture.

- Matte Finish: Grind only to 240-400 grit, suitable for industrial parts requiring flatness without high shine.
- Brushed Finish: Use 150-240 grit sanding belts or non-woven abrasive wheels, maintaining unidirectional motion for consistent grain patterns.
After establishing proper flatness, proceed with two-stage polishing using compounds and wheels to eliminate micron-level imperfections.
- Cut Buffing: Use black polishing compound with blue airway buffing wheels. This removes microscopic flaws and smooths the surface microstructure.
- Color Buffing: Apply brown compound with yellow wheels, then green compound with untreated white wheels. This critical step enhances reflectivity, creating the signature mirror effect.
- Final Cleaning: Remove residual polish with professional metal cleaner and microfiber cloth using circular motions until achieving distortion-free reflections.
Polishing demands patience and experience. For large workpieces, maintain consistent speed to prevent localized over-polishing. By strictly following this three-phase process, even beginners can significantly enhance stainless steel's aesthetic appeal and durability.
